What Is Depression?

>> Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Depression is a "whole-body" illness, involving your body, mood, and thoughts. Depression affects the way you feel about yourself, the way you think about things and your eating and sleeping habits. Depression is an affective disorder and is not the same as a passing blue mood. Depression is not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be willed or wished away. Depression is not something that you have made up in your head. People with depression cannot merely "pull themselves together" and get better. Many people suffering from depressive never seek treatment. Without treatment (therapy and/or medication), symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years. Appropriate treatment, however, can help most people who suffer from depression get better.
